Albert Fall – Instigator of the Scandal
This article discusses Jane Addams’ and her pacifism. Over the years, she would fight to ensure peace in the world as one of the largest voices of pacifism.
Addams’ had an idea of a “new internationalism.” The article states that Hull House had many different peoples within it and Addams used that as a Metaphor for international relations. She saw many different people from different backgrounds working together for a common good and Addams wanted to see this happen with the global community (Jane Addams).
Addams also used feminism to guide her views on pacifism. She believed that men were often very violent and women were often more understanding. She saw these traits along with the high amounts of men in politics at the time and believed that was the constant violence in the world. Her solution was to have more and advocate for more women in policy which would lead to less conflict and more understanding between nations (Jane Addams).
Finally, Addams hated militarism. She believed that it disrupted society and more war lead to more militarism which also leads to a diversion of resources away from social programs and the economy. These perpetuation of militarism would lead to a warfare mentality as she believed which disrupted lasting peace. Addams also believed that a corrupt police and political system also led an endless cycle of militarism (Jane Addams).
In all, Jane Addams had a very unique form of pacifism. These three main pillars of it were very interesting to learn about.
