The Great Depression was a time of upheaval in our country. Our economy was destroyed and our environment was suffering. However, it saw records amounts of change in our country. Some of our nation’s largest amounts of public policy would be passed during this time under the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.
In the first hundred days of FDR’s presidency, Congress would pass massive amounts of bills known as the New Deal. This was needed due to the extreme effects of the Great Depression on the lives of Americans. An example would be the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, which would help the unemployed. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) would also put 300,000 men to work (Leuchtenburg).
This time would also see the Second New Deal which would work to increase the protections of Americans. An example would be the Works Progress Administration (WPA) which would work to give Americans jobs. Another example that continues to be a large part of our politics today is Social Security, which would work to develop the welfare state of our country.
In all, the Great New Deal’s effects were not just limited in its crisis, but also in its preserving solutions.
